  • Thanks everyone, Euphorbia and Teasel...both deserve a look in. I’ll post some pics in the summer. Let battle commence.....

I would add valerianofficinalis which self seeds prolifically and linaria Canon Went ditto. There is also valerian himalayensis I think which self seeds like billy-o. There is also that white flower with the beautiful perfume whose name escapes me - flowers in early summer..............Add cerinthe polemonium......

The herpetologist is going to need a bigger garden at this rate!

  • Well, I scattered my seed today (actress -> bishop). I went with forget-me-nots, oxeyes, valerian, teasel, borage, verbena, opium poppies, red clover, foxgloves and honesty. The result I think will depend on my soil, which is heavy clay. So excited. Will post pics later. Thanks for all the advice.

Other things that will spread happily of their own accord (not necessarily by seed) - snowdrops, crocosmia, English bluebells, grape hyacinth, oxalis, celandine, primroses, vinca major, perennial sweet peas, anemone hupehensis, violets, Ammi majus, woodruff and nigella.

Well done for not going with fennel and artichoke - they are thugs!

All of those sound good with only one warning: Bronze fennel.  Many plants do not like to be grown near it and I have lost many crocosmia (which are usually bullet proof) grown nearby.

Linaria (purpurea) is a long-flowering prolific self-seeder, purple toadflax. Pollinators love it.
