raised planting beds against brick wall
I want to plant shrubs and roses in beds against a large south facing brick wall just built. There is a 4 brick high damp course and then the membrane with the normal cavity wall of bricks and blocks. The wall is large and imposing which I want to use as an empty canvas for mainly evergreens and also because i have tried growing roses etc in pots and noticed they do so much better in the soil, specially south facing. An additional problem is that i can not dig too deep as there are drain pipes carrying rainwater to a nearby manhole. I wish to raise the beds to about 60cm against the wall. How do i protect the wall from the moisture?

One way would be to build a rear wall into your raised beds and leave a gap against the wall but if you are piling soil up above the DPC then you need a damp-proofing membrane fixed against the wall. However, much of the stuff from builders merchants is pretty thin and easily pierced so I would use heavy duty pond liner fixed to the wall with a suitable adhesive such as a strong 'grab' adhesive.
