transferring shrubs to pots

Hi, we have a Japanese pine that we need to move as it is in the wrong position. The place we wanted to move it too does not have sufficient depth of soil to replant. We don't want it to grow too big so could we transplant it into a large pot?image

Hi Tigger image.  Is your Japanese pine a "Pinus thunbergii"?

I'm not familiar with this tree but Mr Google shows it grown as bonsai, so it should be ok in a suitably sized pot.

The success of the transplant would depend on it's current size and how long it's been growing in open ground of course.  Large, well established trees/shrubs don't take kindly to being uprooted, and you may struggle to get it out. Smaller ones that haven't had time to spread out will cope better with the upheaval.

As with any pot grown plant, you will need to keep on top of feeding and watering it.  I have shrubs in pots that drink gallons in a dry spell image.  I give them a feed in the spring when I replace the top few inches of compost with fresh stuff at the start of the growing season.
