Transpanting a rose tree

peweukpeweuk Posts: 34

We have an established (2-3 years) patio rose tree which is planted in a flower border.

We want to move it - initially to a patio pot - and wonder if it is too early to do so as there are still leaves on it.

Qhat do you experts think.

You can prune off the excess branches and start digging them up now. This will not harm the rose. It's winding down anyway. A little later is fine too, but it's better to do it now before it gets too cold.

    Thanks for that.

This is what the tree looks like now - how much should I prune back, and if I leave it as it is will it do any harm?

Because it is a 'standard' rose, just give the top lollipop shape a light prune. Prune back straggly, stray and weak growth back first, and give all the branches a general prune of around one third off. Try to chop around the base as wide as possible to not disturb too much of the root area. Make sure your chosen container/pot is big and deep enough with good size drainage holes. It should be fine.
