Escallonia cutting/layer

Trying to clear the border of leaves, I've discovered that my escallonia has layered itself and I now have a very healthy looking new little plant alongside.  I'm wondering if I should lift and pot it up now or leave well alone until Spring.  I'm in the North of Scotland and it's getting very chilly now.

Unless you are going to put in a a protected greenhouse or cold frame, it will be safer in the ground until Spring. Lifting it will inevitably damage some roots, in cold weather when it is dormant, rot may set in. In Spring, it can actively outgrow damage.

  • Thanks Fidgetbones for confirming what I thought.  It's quite sheltered under the original bush, so hopefully it'll come through the winter OK and I'll have a nice new plant in Spring..  Definitely feeling quite wintry at night here now image.

I'd leave it too Poly. You could go for it if you bring it undercover, but it's probably less work to wait till spring. It'll look after itself under there image

Are you Inverness side or north west Poly? We've had some snow on the west hills this week so it's definitely feeling more wintery. Plenty of  frosts here where I am too - so much better than rain!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks Fairy.  I'm just south of Inverness, quite high up.  Frosts here too at night, but though we can see the snow on the hills, none here yet, hopefully not for a while yet.  Don't like winter!  Brrr!  image

Lovely area Poly. There'll be a bit of snow on Wyvis I should think.

I don't mind winter as long as I can get out on a hill or two.The cold wet is miserable though. image
