Sweet pea seedlings

I sowed sweet peas 3 weeks ago, I left them in the greenhouse under cover.

They were growing well but over the last few days most of the seedlings have been broken off and I found them on top of the compost, none have been eaten.

Anyone have any idea why this would happen?

Thanks

  • Bet you the seed bit is missing!

It's what mice do  - they got mine last spring when they were quite well grown, the little blightersimage

  • They look as though they have been cut off at soil level, it's a clean cut with no sign of gnawing.

Slugs and snails would have been my guess too, unless the seeds themselves have gone - then it's mice.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks for your replies, I would have expected slugs or snails to have eaten the seedlings but they are left on top of the compost ?

There is no slime trail so maybe mice ?

I will try again and this time cover with glass and see what happens.

Mice are constantly at my sweetpeas - its the reason I don’t autumn sow image its bad enough doing battle with the little blighters in March and April, never mind having to fight them all winter too image
