7 Leafed Rose

I have a David Austin rose, A Shropshire Lad, which I purchased last year and planted this spring, to train up a rose arch. I bought it as a climber, I think.

It is growing well and appears very healthy and produced a good number of blooms in summer. However, I have noticed that some of the stems have five leaves, whilst some have six or seven. The six and seven leafed stems are growing from above the root stock, not below.

Is this usual or do I have a problem? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • Don't worry, it's perfectly normal ... many new roses have old ramblers and other types in their heritage and some of these have more leaflets per stem.

The old saw of 'more than five leaves means it's a sucker' just isn't true.    My dear mother in law once proudly told me she'd dug out the rose in the corner of the garden because it had more than five leaves so must've been a briar .................. she'd only just started taking responsibility for the garden following the death of her dear husband ... he'd been so proud of that Rosa glauca in that corner image

I remember a client proudly telling me he'd just deadheaded the Rosa Glauca .

I said, " Didn't you want the hips in the Autumn? "

" Oh.... won't we get them now? "

" not once you've cut the flowers off"

    " Oh. "

He didn't make THAT mistake again. image

Mind you, I've never told MIL what she did ... she's not a gardener ... she still doesn't understand why the fan trained apricot turned into a huge bushy tree after FIL passed on ... I did try to explain but it just didn't compute ... she's had it dug out now 'cos there was obviously something wrong with it. ... not my place to interfere and she's a very determined lady image
