How do wasps survive winter

I've not seen a lot  of wasps this summer but over the last 2 weeks we are finding 2 or 3 singletons in the upstairs rooms.

I will check in the loft to see if there is a nest but as it's the end of summer I wonder what needs to be done.

Are nests used from one year to the next -  if so can I safely remove it once they are no longer active?

Poor things, but it's good to know as we have a wasp nest behind the wood in the ceiling of our veranda. I've left them alone as they are quite small and don't seem agressive. Had a different sort in the GH, much longer and very agressive, they actually chased me and 3 stung me. Have to admit I sprayed their nest.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
