How to deal with Aneone nemerosa tubers

I bought 3 types of anemone nemerosa this year and fully expected them to be bulbs. Instead they're like root cuttings about 2" long.
What do I do with them? I was expecting just to put them in the ground but that seems a bit haphazard for what appears quite vulnerable.

Thanx for the help - thought it might be something like that. Bit disappointed I won't have a good show this spring tho!
