Hi. Anyone any idea of what is wrong with this hydrangea. Seems to have suddenly gone brown Andy has white fungus growing on it. Is a very well established shrub

That looks like Hydrangea Scale to me

Does look like scale, Ive had one client a few years back hit with this and I ended up cutting it back hard After following advice from the RHS.
You May need to remove the plant and plant another though depending on size and strength of said plant.
ive not seen it appear again after the cut back and the plant is very healthy once more.

Sorry to disagree but the photo shows Hydrangea Scale not Powdery Mildew which is very different.
