Walnut Trees Scotland

Hello, I'm wondering if someone can help me at all?

I'm looking for Walnut trees in Scotland and any information anyone can give or best places to find out more pease?

Ideally I'd love to come and see a fruiting tree locally if someone has one and wouldn't mind? Anyone anywhere in Aberdeen, angus, Fife, Perth, Stirling?

thanks in advance.

  • There is a wonderful old walnut tree by Marks and Spencers, Inveralmond estate.Perth.

Haven't been under it recently to see if had any nuts this year.

If there are nuts you could try growing your own tree.image

  • Thanks very much! I might see if I can get there. That's cracking photo too.

Went to Dundee botanical garden today and saw some. It is a wonderful place! I'd seen the entrance sign, but assumed it was quite a small site - well its huge and beautiful, laid out in different geographical regions. Well worth a visit.

    Thanks for your help :-)

Good luck if you get any nuts.  Tufty the Squirrel enjoys all of ours.

  • I cannot remember where it is but Cluny House Garden, Aberfeldy  has one...the red squirrels there eat the nuts

Well worth a visit esp in spring.

Contact John and Wendy for help.

Have you been to St Andrews Botanic Garden?

Cambo is also worth a visit.

Are you interested in growing them as a crop?

Will take at least 6 years before you get any nuts.

  • Thanks for the info!

We have lots of field boundaries dominated by ash, which are showing signs of ash die back :-(

My plans are to fill them in with trees. I have over 100 wee apple trees to put in this winter and have planted hundreds of acorns, so will see what comes of them, I want holly for birds nesting and have some giant redwoods and monkey puzzle saplings for interest. Thought nut trees would be good as well.

Its a big project, not going to happen quickly!

  • Interesting post. I live in Perthshire and i have just planted 3 of the less common type of red walnuts used in confectionary, I have a 10yr youngster(non red) giving me nuts now but only 30-40 .Planted it along with many Cob nut trees. More than enough nuts left over now that squirrels can do as they wish after i have got my stash. I also planted loads of giant redwoods and grand /noble /fraser etc firs too, some from seeds. Still have left over specimens but running out of room unless i shoehorn in a further small wood. I am an ardent tree lover ..more unusual the better, trying a white mulberry too this year , might be too cold here for it but interesting to find out. Good to read of others just as mad for trees. I am totally over supplied with fruit trees too, it’s a great problem to have i suppose. I didn’t fully comprehend what would happen as they all matured and those little twigs grew into giants. Perthshire truly is big tree country, lucky to live here, come visit and you will see it’s attraction. Good to see other tree fanatics are out there too doing good deeds . good luck...
  • Welcome to the forums graftingforever!

Great to find someone else who loves trees.
Err..I hope you have masses of space ...you do know how fast  Giant redwoods grow. Have you visited Cluny near Aberfeldy they have a beauty. see pic above. Bear in mind they only arrived in Britain 1853...a mere 165 years ago.

Perthshire is Scotlands best kept secret....stunningly beautiful, it has it all, rivers, lochs, mountains, wildlife, castles and many super gardens as well as lovely people...but hey we mustn't tell other people or they will all want to come here!
