Bishop of Llandaff geranium

My Bishop of Llandaff is  still in full bloom and i wish to move it to another part of the garden. Should i leave removal until flowers have died off ,dig up the corms and wait to transplant next spring . or cut flowers off and transplant before we have any more frost. Advise is welcome.

  • I think you mean dahlia.  Yes, best to leave until dormant, lift, then replant in Spring.

  • Dahlias are not frost hardy and will not survive cold wet soil without the tubers rotting.

Unless you live somewhere very mild and the plant is in free-draining soil, it is best to cut it back, lift it , allow the tuber to dry out a little and then store it somewhere frost free over winter, either wrapped in newspaper or in a box with very slightly damp sand or compost.

Bring it out into more warmth and light in the spring and pot up when it starts shooting. Do not plant out until all risk of frost has gone.

  • Hi Buttercupdays,

Thank you for your advice also  re  Bishop of Llandaff DAHLIA not geranium .

  • Due to a lack of space, I've left my dahlias out in the soil for the past few years. I cover the top with a thick layer of mulch and each year the flowers return.

  • Thank you 'fluffy cloud'. I have also left my Bishop of Llandaff out all year for past few years and loaded with flowers each year. I hope ii have tempted fate, but today as weather was good and I need to rearrange some plants/shrubs in my garden for next year I have dug tem up. turned them upside down for moisture to dry out on the  short leftover stems. Then I will store them until spring as advised by other members. Hopes for survival.  Thanks for your comment though.
