bug infested leaves in compost?

I had a major problem with mites in my garden in Southern California and finally gave up. Can/should I use the leaves of my vegetable plants that were infected with mites in my compost bin?

Dear Becky, this a UK based forum, and you have plants and critters over there of which we Brits know nothing (and many that we wish we could grow). Ask us about slugs or bindweed, and we'll talk all day, but you'd be better consulting your neighbours about this one. Whatever afflicts your garden is likely to afflict theirs too!
