they don't like standing in cold wet soil, that's for sure. I left some of mine ( Devon, very wet here, but improved, clay soil ) and to my surprise they were fine.
I left mine out in the garden for the past 2 years and they have given me flowers each time. I give them a heavy mulch about now. Area...Dorset and the soil is heavy clay in some areas.

Roughly, what's your location and what's your soil like? ( dry / sandy, heavy clay? etc)
Midlands and clay but with lots of top soil added.
