Unknown Plant (Weed)?

Can anyone identify the attached please? It grows at ground level and can reach several feet long quite quickly. The spines are needle sharp. Is there a way to kill it off without harming other plants?

A sharp spade through the roots and pull it out. Wear thick bramble proof gloves. They fight back.  I have the scratches to prove it.  When I went on holiday, in a sleeveless shirt, I looked like I had been self harming. image

  • I agree.  Get it out now whilst it is still quite weak as everywhere it touches the ground it will root.  I hope yours is not growing through a holly hedge where I find it invading from next door - your self-harming Fidget is probably similar to mine from the combinatiion of holly and bramble.  Why do we put ourselves through this?

Reminds me of my brother's garden.  In the summer I volunteered to tidy it up, it's a rented house and previous tenant had let it run riot.

i actually found brambles running through 3 plants - Mahonia, Pyracantha and Holly !  Whoever planted these must have feared their neighbours.  My arms were cut to ribbons ( metaphorically speaking ??).
