Mystery plant - ‘herby smell’ red flowers since end of spring

can anyone identify this? It’s got a kind of herby smell to it when leaves are in bed - very strong almost oregano but quite bitter ‘after scent’ to it. Has spread sideways with branches and bright red flowers since the end spring.

thanksnin advance - trying to google how best to take care of it is a nightmare when all I have is ‘herb smelling green plant with red flowers’ is a nightmare!image...

That looks to me like one of the shrubby salvias.

    Salvia microphylla?

  • Marvellous! Thanks so much - will now be able to work out how to look after it best as it’s one of our favourites

Yep, definitely a Salvia. Look after it over winter as they are not always hardy in all areas. Need sun and good drainage. I always take cuttings in late summer and overwinter them in my unheated glasshouse just in case. It will carry on flowering until the frosts start.
