Pampas

Our Pampas had never had feathers in 12 yrs of moving in. Very tell, have cut back but no different. Please help me to get it to flower.  We cannot burn it as it's in the corner of our field

In what season are you cutting it back ?

  • what time of year should we cut it out to divide?

Personally I would divide the clump in the early spring prior to any strong new growth .

    Oops, wrong thread Richard?

Whilst driving around the Bilbao region this last week I have seen whole swathes of waste land, scrub land and undeveloped fields along roadsides chock full of pampas grass in full bloom.

I suspect that if your soil is rich and fertile and not very well drained your plants will feel no need to flower and set seed to reproduce themselves.    Try splitting your clump next spring as grasses often sulk and die if split in autumn and then re-plant in sunny positions with added gravel for better drainage.  Treat them mean.
