Shrub ID, presumably subtropical

A friend of mine saw this shrub on Lanzarote -- I assume an import. I have no idea what it could be, but it looks distinctive, with round veined leaves that are apparently at angles with each other. Also some of the leaves seem rolled up, they might be young leaves.
