It will look better if you chop only the wood or stems. If you chop the leaves in half,it will look awful.

That's a great start. I think you could afford to cut more around the tops and the sides, but of course, all in stages.
Your shrubs are proof that when grown in the ground, Laurus Nobilis do far better and are also much more hardier and happier.
