Snakebark maple bark?

Hi there, I planted an Acer tegmentosum 'white tigress' last year. The bark was a beautiful jade green with very pronounced white stripes running down the length of the trunk. It has been in the ground a year and is now a dirty brown colour with hardly any stripes at all.

I did a lot of research and bought this species for its vibrant colour and the length of time it holds onto that colour, but am concerned I've does something to it or this may be a sign of something underlying wrong with the tree. I cant find much info on the web so thought I'd come on here and ask for some advice.

Many thanks.

On Beechgrove Garden they discussed a similar problem.  The colour was being hidden by a build up of muck on the trunk and branches.  They scrubbed it down with plain water to restore it to what was required.

  • Will take some pics tomorrow, though I can't find a 'before photo.

Will give it a clean also :-)
