Scaffolding for new roof - how to save Wisteria

I need to have my cottage re-roofed. A gorgeous 20+ year old Wisteria covers much of the house and I'm worried the scaffolding will break it during the work which will take around 4 weeks. Can anyone please give me some tips on how to best save my Wisteria? Will it cope with some 'prodding' better during a certain season? Should I 'wrap' it up somehow? Or perhaps there's nothing to worry about? Many thanks for any wisdom.

I've just had a new roof - scaffolding was put around all 4 sides. It did come out a bit from the house so I don't think you need worry too much. My roofers were really respectful of my garden for the whole 5 weeks they were here.

It should be enough to ask the builders to be respectful of your plants.   If they do damage any stems or branches you should prune them back to a leaf node to make a clean cut.    This will be easiest to see and do while the plant is dormant so from leaf fall to bud break.    As the plant should be getting its winter prune in Jan/Feb anyway, try and get the work done by then.

  • Update: the roof was completed and the wisteria bounced back no problem!
Wondering now if anyone has any ideas for heavy duty rubber type ties to hold it against the house? I have used old bike inner tubes but they disintegrate after a while. There are some on Am...n but the longest i can find is 60cm and i will need approx 100cm, Thanks
  • Try searchng for 'garden tree strap' which you cut to length as required.
