Is it safe to plant osmanthus fragrans outdoors?

Hi

I bought an osmanthus fragrans earlier this year and planted it in the garden, agaist the west facing fence. (Im in leeds, west yorkshire) it is about a meter tall. I have read conflicting advice as to its winter hardness in the uk. I was wondering if anyone here has got one, where is it planted and how do you care for it please?

Many thanks for your reply in advance :)

    Hello flowerlover2

One garden I manage has O.fragrans planted against a sheltered South facing wall in a slightly acidic soil .

It stood the winter of 2009/10's severe frosts ; I don't think survival would have been possible in a more exposed site (in Eastern Lincolnshire incidentally) .

If you've a suitable spot , not too wet in winter , give it a try !

  • Thank you very much for your reply, Paul. I will try create a more habitable environment for mine by putting a wooden arbour (with sitting etc, so quite substantial) next to it and hopefully it will provide enough shelter for it!
