maple tree bark

Can anyone help .

We  have a four year old  maple tree,  which the bark has been eaten off,  nearly to the top of the tree.

Only  noticed this in  the last few weeks.  Could it be squirrels,

as we live in the country.

More likely rabbits or deer.  I suggest you put a wire or rigid plastic mesh cage round all your other trees and shrubs to protect them as losing bark like this is usually a death knell.

Wish they’d bed down somewhere here, b!!!!y things are very active come winter,  funny to watch antics on bird feeders though.
