I spoke to my cousin who is a plumber as i wasnt sure who else to call. He reckons its due to the torrential rain we've had. Gave me tips on how to check septic tank (not done yet as its dark). I will do my checks tomorrow. Think I'll phone Scottish water too for extra reassurance. Thanks for all your help and advice. I'll update the thread when i know more. Cheers

When there has been very heavy rain in our garden and you stand in one particular spot, you can hear a noise rather like someone slurping tea from the saucer (ala Compo). Does not sound like water running, but it is definitely caused by water movement in the ground.

  • Was your land originally farmed?

We are rural too and our fields and parts of the garden were drained in the distant past. The soughs (pronounced suffs!) were made from flat pieces of stone and some of them are really deep. In summer you can see where they are by changes in the grass colour, but only if it is very dry, and in the low light of autumn you can see the shadow lines of the slight dips on the opposite hillside.

You could try a water diviner, or just have a go yourself. I have been able to trace blockages in mine just using two bits of wire coat hanger. I have never heard the water running in them, but when it is wet our two streams are competing for attention, so it would not be that obviousimage

Could there be an old well in the garden? During a recent bout of heavy rain,a neighbour discovered an old well underneath his kitchen floor. He was not happy!

Out digging the garden there and can hear water sloshing under ground when i put my spade in. Google couldn't help. I get an expensive feeling about this. please reassure this somewhat normal and I've just not come across it before

I had the very same problem. Everywhere in the garden put my spade in and could hear water. I had decided to call the water company as l was aware of water pipes in my garden. Went to my planter stuck the spade in and heard the water. I turned the spade upside down and out poured the water. 🙂🙂 how embarrassing. I hope this helps someone.

Are you saying your spade had a plastic handle which was full of water? 🤔

Water doesn't make a noise unless it is moving fast.  If your soil is that wet, stop digging.  Just standing on it will be ruining its structure.

But thank you fitz for a possible answer.  We await oooft's update.
