Thanks for all the advice :)

I think I'll wait till next year and give the mushroom compost a good chance to do it's work on the clay soil over winter, I also think the light levels are starting to drop off a bit and the weather is not ideal at the moment, it's really windy!

Our garden is north west facing as well as clay so it does take a while for the soil to warm up and dry out a little bit, so I'll see what the weather is like in the spring and if not ideal I can always wait until the autumn to do a new lawn. At least this time I will be ready to do it early September and I've waited a long time, a couple of more months won't hurt!!

  • The answer depends on the type of grass you're planting. Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80 degrees. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights, and heavier news. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day.

  • @ lacy jones ... This is a UK based website with predominantly UK based members.  We don't have Labor Day but as has been said early September is usually good for seeding lawns
