Carpinus Betulus
in Plants
I have a Carpinus Betulus hedge. I want to reduce its size, about 2ft off the top and 1ft off the sides. It's a nice hedge but getting the point where it needs a harder prune. Would now be a good time to do this?. I have more understanding on beach hedges but not sure if I can treat it the same.

Renovation pruning of deciduous hedges is best done in mid winter when you can see the shape and stems clearly and before the sap starts rising again. It's best to do one side at a time so the untrimmed side can support the rest of the plant thru the next growing season. You can give that side a light trim to keep it neat but not a severe haircut.
Do it on a day when no frost is forecast for a few days so the wounds can heal cleanly. Make sure your secateurs and loppers are cleaned and sharpened to get clean cuts and avoid passing on any microbes form previous trimmings. Clean your pruning saw too if you need to use one.
