Clearing algae

i try to be an organic gardener and collect rainwater in water butts. Im worried that algae and moss spores are contaminating the water as there tends to be both of these growing on compost and around plants. If i use barley straw to clear the algae will the water be safe to use on plants?

Yes the water will be fine.
However remember that moss and algae form where there is lack of light, dampness and poor drainage. Correct the conditions and you'll have less of a problem with moss and algae around your plants.

And make sure the water butts are completely covered.
