lilac flowering

Hi everyone

My Lilac tree has flowers on. the flowers are very small and not tubular as they are at normal flowering time. Has anyone any idea what may be causing this, it has never happened in the 8 years I have lived in the house, does anyone have any idea what is happening?

    Hi Mimi's-gardenimage

Can you post a photo or two of the lilac tree and flowers including a close-up.  To post a photo you start with the camera icon ... if it doesn't upload reducing the size usually works.

  • We have all sorts of things flowering "out of season" this Autumn. Mostly its only on one or two branches but not on the Ceanothus, clematis & viburnum. I know there are late flowering cultivars of all these but mine are not supposed to be them. I just think its the mad weather we have had this year.

This picture is actually from last year, fruit & flower on my Ribston Pippin at the same time- must think its a lemon!

One of my lilacs shed nearly all its leaves in early September cos of the drought.  We've had about 3cms of rain in the last month and it's now bursting out new leaf buds.  Heaven knows what it'll do in spring.

  • I think Obelixx has pointed to the problem. Not sure where you are in the country as conditions have been very different in various places but we had very mild & dry spring, then frost in April/ May + wet. Then very hot and dry main summer followed by cool/ wet days  cold nights etc then suddenly warm again. No wonder the plants are confused I can't keep up myself.
