It's sad when people butcher Monkey Puzzle trees like that. They're such architectural shapes. They grow well up here as our climate suits them, and there are a few near me - although not really in the most ideal places.
They do get massive in the right location - well over a hundred feet. Bearing in mind where they come from ( lower slopes of The Andes at around 3,000 feet ) they have to be pretty tough
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I first fell in love with Monkey Puzzle trees when we visited my relatives in Elsham, Lincs. where there were a few huge trees growing on the estate. I had never seen one before and they fascinated me, so I was delighted when my brother bought our M.P.s for our new daughter - something a bit different - oh and he gave her some premium bonds that came up when she was about 13 years old. Lucky girl!
I think it should be a criminal offence to mutilate a Monkey-Puzzle tree ; the primordial symmetry is so appealing ; their natural habitat in S.America featured strongly in the BBC 'Walking with Dinosaurs' series .
Good evening, I wanted to mention that we inherited a Monkey puzzle tree when we moved in our house 6 years ago, the tree continues to grow and we want to try to halt this as it will be touching the overhead phone cables very shortly.. How do we do this without losing the lovely shape? Anyone? we live near Bakewell in Derbyshire
Good evening Wendy I will have the same problem one day but personally I have seen numerous puzzle tree chopped and they looked ruined. My advice is take some from a tree surgeon or ask the company to lift the cables ?I’ve already decided if I leave I’m taking mine with me ?
Paul is right people should be hung on them for mutilating them. There is one on way to work and it’s around 25/30ft easy and there’s only a ball on the top it looks shocking and more to the point someone on line was selling the cut off branches for fire wood, it made me cringe.
Hi I ve just joined this forum. Re Monkey Puzzle tree. We ve one in our front garden which is about 10 ft tall. Its now too big, so we would like to give it away. We don't want to just chop it down as its a beautiful shape and very healthy. Would it be possible to move it ?? We would need to find somebody who could take it and hopefully re plant it. NOT an easy task, I'm sure
We lop off the brown branches annually tommocom. Our tree is roughly 40 years old and took a few years to establish, and we have lopped brown branches for the past 8 years or so. Approx. 15 feet tall - perhaps a little taller. We have never had fruits on it.

There is one near me with six branches no top...ludicrous!
