Madame Alfred...no flowers in first year ?

image ive planted one either side of this arch, they've both reached the top and look healthy. But no flowers in their first year, is this normal ? I actually wanted more growth than flower to get them established but am just concerned they won't flower next year, south facing and a good amount of sun....any ideas ? Thanks

If "Madam Alfred" is M. Alfred Carriere, I'd say it's way too vigorous for an arch.

RHS says it can reach " 4-8m"

Mme A. Carriere blooms on wood formed in the previous season so I wouldn't have expected it to bloom this year. You should get blooms next year on this years growth.

Train new shoots around the supports while they are still young and pliable to stimulate the production of side shoots which will produce the flowers and ensure that the arch has blooms all the way up and not just at the top.

  • Thank you all for taking the time to reply. Not sure where Tarmac got mixed in but hey ! I dont mind it being vigorous in growth as I like my plot to be on the wilder informal side and already having a Kiftsgate Rose scrambling through some trees it makes Madame AC seem sluggish ! I think Dovefromabove has nailed it and I'm a bit more hopeful of some blooms next year. Thanks again.
