Straightening a Prunus?

I recently purchased a discount prunus amanogawa and it is a little bent over at the top.

Do I give it a year or two to see if those bits straighten up as it grows or do I cut my losses and prune them off in the summer next year?

It might straighten up as it heads for the light but maybe you could encourage it with a cane or post and a gentle tether.

  • I'd thought of that but it is already 2.5m tall. I have been trying to work out how to straighten up such a big one!

There are tall canes available or posts.  If you prune the tip you'll end up making it branch and that may spoil the shape even more.
