Indoor bulbs

I have planted indoor hyacinths for the last few years and this year I have tried indoor narcissi too. However I find every time that the root growth forces the bulbs out of the compost and as the tip of the bulb is already showing when planted the bulbs often fall over causing growth at odd angles. What am I doing wrong?

Irrespective of the tips already showing , you ought to try planting much deeper (maybe in larger pots) , in a heavier  grittier growing medium (for stability) .

This shouldn't damage the new shoots . When you think about it , bulbs in gardens are underground permanently , and new growth has to start somewhere .

  • Keep them as cool as you can too, as In warm conditions they grow faster and lankier.

Once the shoots are a couple of inches / 5 cm  or so long, give them as much light as you can, as this too will slow growth and make them  a bit more compact.
