Dahlia failure
My dahlias were a total failure this year. No flower managed to open, although I did get buds. They were in pots at backdoor with lots of sun and water. The leaf and buds were eaten by something. I did see 1 earywig and have slugs and snail.I did use some pellets but I don't really like to use too often.I want to store what's left of the tubers and try again next year.
What is the secret to success to getting lasting blooms (or any!) on your dahlias

Mine weren't much better this year either. I usually get a good show from them.
Other plants also flowered poorly . I too had a major problem with slugs and snails and I think the very varied alternations in the weather this year favoured the molluscs over many plants
Is it a regional thing, I wonder? I have moaned about ground elder (and elephant hawk moths). I have also had some snail damage - but no slugs! Can't believe it! (Live in Dorset).
I will try again next year ,I will be useing copper tape round pots and putting in straw filled pots on canes at night with a top dressing of gravel around tubers.i might even try a garlic spray when foliage starts to grow. Any other ideas welcome as I would love to have a good show at my back door.
I had one that didn't flower, I'm not sure if the spot I put it in this year is a bit dark and the soil a bit heavy so next year I'll try somewhere else for that one.
Whereas this chap has been the star of the garden this year in a fairly sunny spot with nice loose open soil. I think this is a giant dahlia, I got it from the local Garden Club sale for charity the year before last. I will definitely be putting it back in the same spot next year, it's been fabulous. I'll write that on the label for the pot when I overwinter it!
Lovely. It will just make me more determined to do better next year! ??watch out!
Slow day, I find the lambs wool pellets really successful as a mulch, slugs & snails hate the 'hair like' texture
No problem with Dahlias this year, I bought the tubers late so only paid 50p for each tuber.
They are growing in my cut flower plot along with the veg, this picture was taken in August but they are still growing strong and picking flowers for the house.
Sorry forgot to add the picture, senior moment I think,
now cant seem to upload picture, I quess you will have to take my word for it.
Hurray it worked.
Green with envy ?
