Canna
in Plants
Has anyone grown tropical plants?
This is my Canna, its still in flower and still growing at five foot. It cost me £10.00 for the plant and the same for posting. At the time it seemed expensive but I have got three pups off it so not a bad return.
This is an earlier image and I thought it was never going to flower.

Quite a lot of us here grow, or have grown, Cannas, as well as other tropical or 'tropical appearing' plants Kate, but there's a virus which attacks them and it's been a bit prevalent this year. I'd intended getting another one for this garden, but it's put me off. Pity - as they're stunning plants, especially the foliage
I don't really have anywhere to overwinter them anyway now, so after losing the last one, I just have to find alternatives.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
It looks like " tropicana Black", If you're in a mild area with free draining soil, it might survive in the ground, or, once the first frost knocks it back, you can lift it and dry it like dahlias.
I'm sure a google search on " overwintering cannas" will yeild the information you need.

We cut them down before the frost to two bottom leaves with the stems about one or two feet then wrap in fleece and put them somewhere frost free.
I got mine from Desert To Jungle

Kate says:
"We cut them down before the frost"
Why?
we got our canna from Hostafan
. Shame I don't have a photo on this phone ... It's been glorious but is going over now. We protect the container with polystyrene. and pop it all in the in the little unheated greenhouse for the winter.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
It might be a mild winter with some luck although we must be due a severe one because we hav’nt had a real corker of one since 2010.
I would not risk any of my tropicals in the ground in winter. I am doing a trial with the pup off the main one which became detached by a cat or bird. So that one and only that one has been planted with quite large grass sods where the grass died down, then fleece.
See how it goes come the Spring.
this is mine what's happen to it ?
