Is it too soon to cut back clematis?

All my Clematis are the sort you prune hard back each spring.I was trying to just trim back some of the shoots today as they are growing through shrubs etc. They are all shooting out as they would next year so is it OK to cut hard back now?

I sometimes tidy up Group 3 clems at this time of year if I need to do a bit of renovating to other plants, but I've never cut them back as hard as I would in late winter/early spring. Don't see why you couldn't though.

Any new growth would get knocked back by the cold weather when it arrives, but I can't see that it would affect them drastically.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
