Can you start a rhubarb in a container?

 Hi

I was wondering if it is possible to start growing a rhubarb crown in a container (such as the bags you can get for this) and then transfer it into the actual soil after a few months?

The reason being, I want to grow a rhubarb at my allotment, but I only got the allotment  this year and I'm still working on renovating it; the space where the rhubarb will go is near where I need to sort the compost piles, and I will need access to this. I'm worried about trampling the rhubarb if I put it in now... But I also want to get it going so I don't miss the best planting season this year.

I thought if I grow it in one of those big bags, I can keep it nearby so the environment is similar, then when ready pop it the hole, cut open the sides, and remove the bag?

Yes.  I have 3 new crowns bought for my new garden but it has been so dry we haven't been able to lay out the potager and make a home for them so I potted them into bigger pots and have watered them all summer.   They'll go out this autumn - when we've had some rain.
