Tulip planting
i am ready to plant my tulip bulbs in containers, & wonder about what composition of soil they like. I have 6 plant troughs in Guildford, which has very clay soil, so I have bought some gravel to mix into some organic matter : Can some kind person advise approx proportions for soil mix for tulips. Troughs are 25cm deep, will this be deep enough for tulips? Planning 10bulbs per each 70cm long trough (?)
thankyou, Tads ????

Hi Tads
My pots and planters are filled with multi purpose compost and a couple of handfuls of grit. If I plant in the garden and the soil is a clayey (is that a word)? I will put a little bit of grit down for the bulb to "sit" on. It is quite surprising what strong roots tulips can produce and to be honest they seem to thrive quite well. My window box is usually planted with Praestens tulips which are smaller and in proportion with the depth of it. It may be about 25-30 cm deep -not quite sure. The pots are a little deeper and can accommodate larger tulips. As long as you can plant bulbs at least to the recommended depth you should be ok.
oh thanx Jessum, that’s very helpful ?✔️ & thanx for lovely pics of yours ? x
