Tree Peonie?

i have a very large shrub in my garden whose leaves remind me of a fig tree (not that I've ever seen one!) but was recently told it was a tree peonie.  It has a few pods on that contain 3 very hard black 'berries/nuts' in, but i have not seen a flower on it in he 3 years I have lived here.  Can anyone tell me if this is a peonie that has just been crowded out by other, very closely packed shrubs.

i know I sound thick but moved here from an appartment with no garden, so just learning what I have in a very large one.  Any help would be appreciated.

This is our tree peony flowering earlier this year.  There are other colours than pink but the leaves should be similar if yours is a tree peony.

The description of the seeds and pods sounds right. If you're trying to post a photo, make it smaller before posting

  • There seems to be a running error so it's been difficult to post a thank you, I'm trying again....

obelixx. Your tree peony is beautiful, I shan't post a pic of mine as it looks a little forlorn right now, it's about 7ft tall and 4ft wide so if I can nurture it it should be beautiful when the other shrubs are removed to give it room.  Thanks again.

nutcutlet, I am amazed that the seed pods are so strong and sturdy when the flowers are so delicate looking.  Thank you again both of you. X

those black seeds are fertile Lorraine. If you sow them now and leave them outside in the weather through winter they should germinate in spring. More plantsimage

Lorraine - this is the second week of our second year in this garden.  That tree peony was bald and very sad when we arrived last year but I've watered it thru the drought and fed it pelleted chicken manure last spring and I dead-headed it except for a few I left to set seed.   It looks a lot better this year than last and still has leaves on it.   I'll be collecting the seed to sow this week some time.

The flowers on mine have a lovely perfume.  I hope yours will enjoy the extra space it will get and produces some lovely blooms.  Try feeding it in spring, as above, or with slow release rose food which also encourages flowers.
