mulch

I have a fruit cage with dwarf apples and pears, plums and raspberries. What mulch is best when they are dormant through the winter?

  • Homegrown compost is as good as any and leaves are usually in abundance this time of year!

Fruit trees like a slightly acidic soil (pH around 6) so you can reduce the pH of compost by including coffee grounds and/or pine needles, or, of course, just mix in a little shop-bought ericaceous compost.
