And what a beauty it is GD2.

    By the way:

RUN FOR THE HILLS, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE. IT'S SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO POISONOUS.

    Devon.
  • I totally agree! It looks so healthy and is the star of that spot!
    Cloggie says:

Fatsia Japonica is the plant I've had in every garden I've owned.  I had one about 6' tall when I moved in, in a South-East position against a fence in the NW of England (by the coast though so mild).

I wasn't going to reply to this post on first reading because I don't see anything wrong with the plant in the picture, it looks fabulous in my opinion, it must be happy where it is.

What is the problem?  It isn't crowding anything out (there's no planting underneath), it's healthy, architectural and looks like the star of its spot.

What is the problem?  Help me out here! image

    "what is the problem?"

Methinks the clue is in the first line of the original post

    My wife hates it"

I think it looks great, but it's not my garden and I'm not married to his wife. image

  • Thanks for all the lovely comments regarding my "Castor Oil" plant. It is a feature plant and we love it and have no intention of cutting it down, however we had to stake it up a couple of weeks ago when it was incredibly windy.  I thought it would completely die down in the winter if it hadn't already blown down.  The guy who gave it to me said to start again next spring, we should have plenty of seeds if it doesn't blow down before they have matured.

Yes GD - you're right in that your plant is the castor oil plant - Ricinus. Yours looks stunning.

Fatsia used to get called the False Castor Oil, but as there was a pic in the OP's original post, I think most of us just went with it! image

I don't have an OH any more, to please or otherwise, so if I wanted twenty Fatsias - I'll have them  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
