Advice needed on what to do with these strawberries
in Fruit & veg
Hi, I purchased be these strawberry plants yesterday at a local garden centre, don't ask me why. I was just intent on purchasing something green ???? i need some advice on what to do with them, would they be safe to plant now in the UK? Should I keep them in the container they came in and plant them in the spring? any advice on how I can help these plants survI've the winter and hopefully thrive next summer would be much appreciated.

Just pot them up individually Danny. They'll probably be pretty congested in those little spaces. Are they the everbearing ones? I'd take the flowers off as they're not going to make fruits now, even if they are everbearing. It'll allow the plants to concentrate on making good roots too, for next year.
Water well and stick them outside somewhere sheltered so that they don't get blown away!

Thank you thank you for your advice, I'll pot them up tomorrow. my allotment is particularly windy so the only place that would be wind proof would be in the polytunnel, but that's obviously not outside so I'll keep them at home till they are ready for planting next year. Thanks again
And I'm not sure what variety they are, it doesn't say anything on the container.
Nothing wrong with them being in your polytunnel Danny - it will bring them on for earlier crops ( the commercial growers have them in polytunnels for exactly that purpose) but it's not necessary for strawbs to be inside
As long as they have ventilation for good pollination, they'll be fine. You could plant some outside next year, and keep some inside to give you a few early ones to eat while you're grafting

Sounds good to me! I'm planning on constructing some kind of bed for them for outside so until then I'll keep them in my polytunnel. Thanks for your help, I'm very grateful.
Most of all - enjoy them Danny. It's what they're for!
A good feed now and again, well enough watered (no problem here if they're outside) and keep the manky leaves off them to keep the plants clean. That's about it.
I find strawbs quite easy - apart from keeping the ruddy slugs off them just when they're ready to eat...
