Cupressus Cashmiriana

During the last very bad winter I boght two semi mature Cupressus Cashmiriana which got very bad dieback! The following year I bought another younger specimen which I have shielded in the worst of the winter weather and it looks beautiful. I dearly want it to remain healthy and grow strong! My garden is in East London and fairly protected! For the past three years I have placed fleecy covering on tall stakes which the tree has now outgrown!

Will my lovely tree survive without staking fleece around it? Despite coming from the Himalayas I understand they susceptible to very cold weather!

It all depends on whether you have a protection with walls, tall buildings and also your soil type. Sounds like your tree has thrived on the soil conditions. It's important the soil is light and free draining. If you seldom get frost in the winter time, it's mainly the base area you need to protect. Think about covering the areas around the base with straw, or similar. You need to check that the rain has not caused the base to rot, so you will need to change the straw and dress again.

It's still a young tree, so I don't think it's a good idea to completely go without fleece. Only use it on the really harsh days. I also don't think you need to use stakes if it's too much trouble, just drape it over your plant. You can get sheets of fleece and cut to size. Builders' dust sheet does the job. So much cheaper too.

Cupressus cashmiriana !!!!......one of the most attractive conifers in existence ; look after them image

If you like 'pendulous' conifers , take a look at Picea breweriana , aka 'Brewers Weeping Spruce' !!

  • Thank you very much for your replies!

The Cupressus Cashmirinana is fairly well protected about twenty feet behind a neighbour has tall conifers and I guess the fleece I draped over the worst of the winter  is about eight foot high surrounding the front and sides! Last year I cleared the base and laid bark chippings!

Has anybody have or seen a healthy mature/semi mature Cupressus Cashmiriana?

My Deadora has grown to about twenty feet and my very nice weeping Nootka Cypress seems very healthy too!

The Cashmiriana is in my opinion the most beautiful shape and colour and also smells very nice too!

I look forward to hearing from you.
