  • If you are sure your plant is currently a problem, could you not dig down around and through the roots (within (eg) a 2 feet radius of the central stem) and block its further growth with a barrier of some kind?

I reckon that even as a spindley old lady, I could personally dig down at least 1.5 feet and set in a metal barrier (for example).  If I needed more than that,  I could call in friends, and together we could dig up the whole of this plant , set a very  large tub in the ground and re-settle the plant inside the tub so it is again soil height but cannot intrude on any other plant growth.

It's definitely a Phormium you have in that first pic, and no, the roots don't cause problems. They are indeed yellow Hosta, and quite thick and fleshy  image

If you have an issue with roots spreading and causing an issue, it's from something else. A tree or shrub perhaps.

What exactly have you dug up there (a pipe?) and where is it in relation to the Phormium? A pic of the wider area and where these problem roots are would help, including the shrubs or trees near it.

Usually, the only roots which cause issues on grass are from trees and large woody shrubs,  as they can lie just under the surface and create lumps and bumps. Obviously, I'm not including  things like invasive weeds - that's another problem altogether.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks to all who have responded, very helpful. Final image shows a hole plug which has been cut approx 18 inches deep, approx 8ft away from the Phormium & the other shrubs along side it. So its safe to say something in the shrub area has roots which have worked there way over & underneath the putting green. I was hoping to narrow down which shrub/plant it is but if need be I will remove everything there & relocate somewhere suitable. Yes, trenching between the shrub plot & the putting green & installing a barrier is an option but Im more likely to remove all together.

    Thanks again
