Differentiate currants

Hi, I've inherited a few currant plants on my new allotment.  I know I'm meant to be maintaining black currants but how can I differentiate them from white and red currants?  If I can't tell the difference should I do anything with the plants over the winter or just leave them till next year when I know what they are?

red currant bushes are generally much bigger, if that gives you a clue

  • crush one of the leaves and smell it.

Red/white currants don't smell of much but black currants smell really strongly.

as Tootsietim says, smell, just push past the blackcurrents and you will smell them! But they'll survive not being pruned for a year, mine have survived no pruning for 30+ years, they manage. Size isn't really a comparison, I think my blackcurrent bushes are marginaly bigger than the redcurrents but I would need a tape measure to be sure.
