Unknown plant - with a problem?

imageimageimage

Hi Gardeners!

My colleague and I have been trying to help our boss look after this plant, which was a present from his late wife. We recently repotted them into this pot, with normal soil, as they had outgrown the previous one (they were very hard to prise out!).

Since then, he has been watering once a week as he says he has done for years. However, it looks like it isn't happy (it has spots on the leaves - see photos). Also, the smaller one has no leaves (apparently it had leave for several years until recently).

Can anyone help us? We need to identify the plant and understand the best care instructions.

Many thanks!

That looks like a terra cotta pot, was it in a plastic one before?  Terra cotta is porous and allows water to evaporate through it, which plastic doesn't, so it might need more water than it did before. You could try standing it in a decorative glazed pot, which would slow down the water loss.

Interesting plant. It could be Beaucarnea Recurvata, Pony-tail Palm. If it has never bloomed, it could be this plant. Needs dry soil and pot bound. So possibly too wet in a larger pot.
