Potato problems

Hi

Just been digging up my first potatos I have ever planted.  I am disappointed though.  The Charlottes are fine - is it too late to eat these?

The Sarpo Mira and Maris Pipers are covered in small holes and at least one spud on each plant is just slime.  What have I done wrong?  I really want to know so I can correct it for next growing season.

They were grown in clay soil.

Thanks

Sam

  • I don't have a picture yet but the small holes seemed to have larger cavities behind them inside the potato.  Don't know if that helps

Do the seed potatoes turn to slim then?  Did not know that lol.  The soil hadn't been worked for 2 years.  I am moving plots though to one that has been worked continuously, so much easier to dig too lol

    Thanks

  • If it's keel slugs (which I have in my clay soil) the most effective thing to do is grow potato varieties which are resistant to them.  While nematodes reduced the general slug population in my garden, the keel slugs were still abundant.  I've found Kestrel are the best in this respect closely followed by Sarpo Mira.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I had Sarpo Mira but they have been eaten by the slugs too.  Will try Kestrel next year :)
