Red stem bamboo help

image

Hi all.

I received three red bamboo plants,  or fargesia Asian wonder.

They say that they can get up to 3 metres tall, but what would their spread be?

How far apart should I plant them to screen the corner of my garden where I'm overlooked?

Also how far from the fence line should I plant them so they don't intrude on my neighbours.

Thanks all

    Hello andrew k

Fargesia species , like any bamboo , seem to attain equal height and spread . Though attractive plants , I have had past problems with them .

Personally , I would be very careful as to where you plant them image .

  • Thanks. But what problems do you mean and why should I be careful? Do you mean to say that each plant will get 2-3 metres spread as well as height?

I have one that has spread to 10 metres wide.  Very hard to dig out to contain it.

  • Oh really? I might just keep them in pots then.. Maybe I could by cheap plastic pots and just plant them in the buried pots to contain them a bit. Didn't realise they got so out of control. The write up about them said non invasive and easy to contain.

    Excellent advice from MuddyFork image

  • Could I plant it in one of those rectangular planters to contain the roots, and then dig a trench for the planter?

I have read about some people laying slabs vertically to contain it, but I guess a cheap plastic planter would have the same effect?

PS :- When you think you've got all the roots from your garden , they appear again and againimage !

Just read your last post , maybe worth a try .

  • Hi Andrew K. I have received these same 3 plants but they don't have red stems! Yours look the same. Do they change from green when they mature? I can't get an answer from anyone!

    Hello Sylvia 159

Fargesia scabrida 'Asian Wonder' is known for its striking colourful stems , although I think this applies only to new growth .

During the dormant period in our part of the world , the older stems probably revert to green .
