That looks like an Eupatorium (aka Joe Pye Weed)
It is. Thank you. I can now send the seeds to the Hardy Plant society and name them. I am happy not to regard it as a weed and to know that it attracts birds and butterflies.
It can be a weed. It has spread along the old railway line between Parkgate and Gayton for quite a distance. Can only be a garden escape as it is an American native.
