Repotting
I have an acer in a pot that I repotted this spring into a big pot. I'm just wondering after reading another thread about repotting an acer what happens if it isn't possible to repot into a bigger pot.
I haven't seen any containers bigger than the one mine is in now, so what should I do next time if I can't find a bigger pot? Should I root prune it instead?
It inadvertently had a root prune this year as I stupidly put it into a spherical pot last time and it proved nearly impossible to get it out! I won't make that mistake again.

You dont need to prune them, mine have been in pots for 5 years no problems, I havent re-potted them either.
Try keeping this one in a pot

Once they've reached the maximum size of pot you can find or manage, just make sure you remove and refresh the top couple of inches of compost each spring. If that becomes full of roots then all you can do is make sure you keep it adequately watered and give it a spring top dressing of slow release food and regular drinks of something like liquid seaweed or home-made nettle or comfrey tea to keep it healthy.
Mother-in-law gaves us a couple in pots I would say about a foot tall, we kept them in pots, then planted a couple in our last garden, one a lovelly pink/cream/pale green verigated was about 10 feet tall, when we moved, I could keep that one in MY garden puncod!
