Chestnut tree disappointment!
Hi
I'm hoping that someone can help me!
We have (what we have been told) is a sweet chestnut tree in our garden.
I was very excited at the thought of roasting chestnuts, but all of the nuts seem to be half green and shriveled.
Does anyone know the reason for this?
Many thanks
Anna

It's probably still a little early for the decent sweet chestnuts at the moment. Maybe wait for another month. If later in the next month, you still see similar issues, it's likely your tree may have suffered from the dry weather in the summer. But usually, the weak ones drop off first when there is heavy rain and wind. It's still early at the moment.
My local park is absolutely jam packed with these trees and still they are planting more. In late October to November hordes of visitors literally come in their pull shopper bags and fill them up. There are some really old trees there that are still going, and the trunks are huge. Have a little patience, I'm sure in another month's time, there will be more.

Thank you for your reply
I'm hoping that it's a bit early, like you say! It just looks like most of them are already on the ground
